Testimonials from Emma Mortier (Assistant Claims Handler), Ngueye Thiam (Claims Handler), Stéphane Ntche (Assistant Claims Manager), and Natasha Etoa (Claims Handler) of Budd Group, a worldwide network of P&I and H&M Club Correspondents.
1. How has the P&IQ benefitted you so far?
Ngueye Thiam: The P&IQ module 1 helped me broaden my maritime industry knowledge, enabling me to respond better to diverse challenges. I look forward to the following modules that will help me gain those extra technical skills necessary to become a great claims handler.
Emma Mortier: As a recent graduate in Maritime law, the P&IQ has been beneficial in helping me review in detail all the different complexities of the shipping world. The first module of the P&IQ is extremely comprehensive and develops all the important matters that a person involved in this industry should understand.
Natasha Etoa: This experience has allowed me to gain new insights and reinforce my existing knowledge. The comprehensive support provided, which explained the reasoning behind each concept, was extremely valuable. The revision material will remain a valuable resource for my work.
Stéphane Ntche: Personally, presenting the basic concept in a coherent manner as in Module 1, has enabled me to better understand the maritime industry and its evolution, also revising existing basic legal knowledge. This goes a long way to provide better assistance and defenses during claims handling.
2. Has the P&IQ positively affected your career?
Ngueye Thiam: Absolutely, passing that first module has given me extra confidence in handling client files. It has refined my analytical skills, allowing me to enhance and address daily operational challenges more effectively.
Emma Mortier: The P&IQ has had a significant positive impact on my career. As a claim assistant working at BUDD GROUP, the P&IQ provided me with a comprehensive knowledge base that has been invaluable in my daily tasks and in my interactions with our principals.
Natasha Etoa: The extra knowledge gained with the P&IQ has helped me build on my existing skills. It was also a chance to demonstrate my capabilities within the team. Moreover, having passed that first module encourages our principals to have more confidence in us knowing that we better understand their requirements and can meet them to the best of our abilities.
Stéphane Ntche: As a student of maritime law, I must say it has affected my career positively, especially with the knowledge on some few technical issues which we meet regularly on the field. The acquisition of this technical knowledge has improved field assistance provided to Mandates.
3. Do you have any top revision tips?
Ngueye Thiam: I recommend summarizing each chapter and creating a glossary of new terms to enhance clarity and retention. This practical method greatly improved my comprehension and learning of the material.
Emma Mortier: My top tip would be to use the practice exams provided. They are an excellent way to prepare and familiarize yourself with the format and type of questions you will encounter. Also, although not always easy, dedicating consistent time each week to study is key.
Natasha Etoa: To maximize assimilation of content, I would recommend dedicating 30 minutes daily to reading and understanding each chapter and summarize key points through rigorous notetaking. I would also recommend going through all mock exams, as they give you an idea of the format of questions and help you picture yourself in exam situation. Our management also organised video calls with P&IQ exam candidates across our offices, so that we could share knowledge, question each other and seek guidance from more experienced colleagues to clarify any unclear points.
Stéphane Ntche: I recommend dedicating 1 hr. daily to reading with the objectives of each chapter at mind, summarizing and searching comparative wording for each chapter not well understood.
4. How do you find the exams?
Ngueye Thiam: The exams were thorough, with recurring patterns in the structure and content of the questions.
Emma Mortier: I find the exams to be quite challenging but fair. They require a deep understanding of the course material. The format is clear, and you have enough time to respond to all the questions without being in a rush.
Natasha Etoa: This was my first experience of this type, and I was impressed by the supervisor's supportive attitude. She helped me manage my stress and anxiety, offered words of encouragement, and was both friendly and professional. Each chapter of the document had been reviewed. The exam was thorough and well-organized, requiring full attention throughout. While I appreciated getting my results quickly, I would have liked to see the correct answers to the questions I struggled with afterward.
Stéphane Ntche: Since this was my very first time taking such exams I found it challenging but very much educative, it makes me motivated to pursue with the following modules.
5. Would you recommend the course to others?
Ngueye Thiam: I would highly recommend this course for its detailed exploration of the maritime industry, equipping you with practical solutions applicable in any global context and finally it offers operational readiness.
Emma Mortier: I would highly recommend the P&IQ to anyone interested in or looking to advance their career in the maritime industry and P&I sectors. It provides invaluable knowledge and a respected qualification provided by the International Group of P&I Clubs.
Natasha Etoa: Indeed, it is extremely valuable for our maritime and P&I sector.
Stéphane Ntche: Absolutely, I would recommend this course to anyone that wants to touch the basis and the core of the maritime industry.
