BIMCO's GUARDCON contract has been developed to provide shipowners and private maritime security companies with a comprehensive standard contract to govern the employment of security guards on board merchant vessels. GUARDCON was developed by a BIMCO working group which included shipowner representatives, underwriters, P&I; Clubs and practising lawyers with experience of maritime security contracts. In addition private maritime security companies, insurance underwriters, International Group Clubs and BIMCO’s documentary committee played an important role in reviewing GUARDCON. GUARDCON is accompanied by Guidance on the Rules for the Use of Force.
